OpenICE #3 at the Chicago Cultural Center: Inner Songs

  • Preston Bradley Hall Chicago Cultural Center 78 E. Washington St. Chicago (map)

James Austin Smith, oboe
Cory Smythe, piano
Ross Karre, percussion

OpenICE #3 features powerfully individual and intimate voices in music spanning 160 years.  Works of Unsuk Chin, Du Yun, Elliott Carter and Ernst Krenek are paired with 19th century visionaries Clara and Robert Schumann.  ICE pianist Cory Smythe, oboist James Austin Smith and percussionist Ross Karre present an afternoon of contrast in which the melancholic, sinuous, and chaotic"Inner Songs" of the present promise to illuminate a deceptively lyrical and sentimental Romantic past.

Program:

Clara Schumann: Romances, for Oboe and Piano Op. 22 (1853)
Ernst Krenek: Four Pieces, for Oboe and Piano (1966)
Robert Schumann: Arabesque, Op. 18 (1839)
