Musicological Comments

In honor of Kaija Saariaho's 60th birthday, we are featuring this live ICE recording from 2009. ICE performed Kaija Saariaho's Solar at the MCA Stage in Chicago, alongside classic works such as Lichtbogen (1986) and the recent Terrestre (2002), featuring Claire Chase on solo flute. Solar is a sparkling ensemble piece, with swirling textural effects created by two electronic synthesizers. ICE has collaborated with Ms. Saariaho on several occasions, gave the US premiere of her sparse and elegant ballet Maa, and will bring Maa to Paris in 2013.

14 October, 2012—Happy birthday, Kaija!
