ICE NYC in Cologne
This classic ICE program brings together music from New York icons Steve Reich and Elliott Carter with a younger generation of pioneering New Yorkers that blur the boundaries between composer and performer, and break down barriers of genre. Featured is ICElab 2011 composer Marcos Balter's theatrical Æsopica, based on Æsop's beloved fables.
Program:
Steve Reich: Vermont Counterpoint, for flute and tape (1982)
Elliot Carter: Esprit Rude/Esprit Doux, for flute and clarinet (1985)
Mario Diaz de Leon: Altar of Two Serpents (2010)
Phyllis Chen: Mobius, for music box and electronics (2011)
Alvin Lucier: ICEcles for flute, clarinet, tuba and piano (2010)
Peter Evans: Agents of Mechanization, for trumpet, guitar, piano, percussion (2010)
ICElab 2012: World Premiere (2011)
Marcos Balter: Æsopica, for ensemble with narrator (2011)
ICElab receives leading support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, alongside generous funding from the Greenwall Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
ICE’s appearance at Eight Bridges is made possible, in part, by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through USArtists International in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

May 3, 2012
This will be a weekend to see composer as performer, performer as sound agent, silence as music, and music as language.
